Employer not liable in crash that killed three

DETROIT (AP) -- A federal jury in Detroit has ruled that the employer of a man imprisoned in the 2005 deaths of three members of a suburban Detroit family is not to blame for the traffic accident. The jury ruled last Thursday that UGS Corp., now Siemens, wasn't responsible for the actions of its former salesman, Thomas Wellinger. Wellinger was sentenced to 19 to 30 years after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the deaths of Judith Weinstein of Farmington Hills and her sons. Police say Wellinger's blood alcohol level was at 0.43 when his SUV hit the Weinsteins' car at 70 mph. Judith Weinstein's husband, Gary, sued UGS, saying it let Wellinger leave its Livonia office visibly intoxicated. UGS says co-workers noticed no signs Wellinger was drunk.
