 Supreme Court Learning Center observes Law Day May 3

Law Day 2010 was celebrated with Lansing-area activities and tours sponsored by the Michigan Supreme Court Learning Center.
This year’s theme, “Law in the 21st Century: Enduring Traditions, Emerging Chal-
lenges” was explored by guest speakers and students as they studied the Learning Center exhibits. Members of the judiciary discussed how courts apply core democratic values of justice, equality, and diversity to ensure a fair and accessible legal system.
Speakers included Court of Appeals Judge Douglas B. Shapiro, who spoke to Okemos’s Kinawa Middle School students. Michigan Supreme Court Justice Michael F. Cavanagh addressed Wexford Montessori students when they visit the Supreme Court courtroom at 1 and 2 p.m.
In addition, winners of a statewide essay contest sponsored by the Michigan Lawyers Auxiliary, including middle school students from L'Anse Creuse, Tappan Middle School, St. Thomas the Apostle, and Paw Paw, were honored at a noon luncheon, after touring the Learning Center at 11 a.m.
In addition to keynote speaker Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Marilyn Kelly, winners heard from, among others, Janet Welch, Executive Director, State Bar of Michigan (SBM); Sue Patterson, President, Michigan Lawyers Auxiliary; Mary Ann Farris, Michigan Lawyers Auxiliary Law Day chair; Fran Anderson, Michigan Lawyers Auxiliary Crystal Apple Award chairperson who was 1974-75 president of the Michigan Lawyers Auxiliary and president of the American Lawyers Auxiliary from 1978-79; Charles Toy, SBM President; and Margaret Krasnoff, Chair of the Law Day subcommittee of SBM’s Law-Related Education and Public Outreach Committee.
