SBM member discounts at ABA Techshow

The 25th annual ABA Techshow, on April 11-13, 2011 in Chicago (www.techshow.com), offers attorneys insights into new forms of technology, and how these can be used to enhance the practice of law. This year’s keynote speaker is Harvard Law School Professor Larry Lessig, director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics. It will also include more than 50 informative sessions on new technology, and access to over 100 exhibitors.

Members of the State Bar of Michigan are eligible for substantial discounted rates. The standard registration fee is $1,025, but SBM members can register for only $875. Those who register prior to Feb. 25 will save an additional $200, for only $675. Special registration rates are also available for paralegals ($525; $425 early bird) and law students ($50).

SBM accepting McCree Award nominations

Nominations are now open for SBM's 37th Annual Wade H. McCree Jr. Awards for the Advancement of Justice. The McCree Awards recognize Michigan broadcast, print media, and online journalists who foster greater public understanding of the values of our legal and judicial system through published materials.

To be eligible, written and online materials and radio and television broadcasts must be published and/or aired between Jan. 1 and Dec, 31, 2010, must inform and educate citizens about the role of the law, the courts, law enforcement agencies, and the legal profession in society. They should also disclose practices in need of improvement and encourage efforts to update and modernize our laws, courts, and law enforcement agencies.

Print and online entries may consist of feature or news articles, interpretive analyses, editorials, or combinations of these. In the broadcast category, documentaries or educational or editorial programs may be submitted. There is no charge for entering. The awards will be presented in April in conjunction with the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
