Pointers for property tax appeals

The Oakland County Bar Association (OCBA) hosted a seminar titled “Property Tax Appeals: Practical Pointers from All Sides” on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the Oakland County Bar Center in Bloomfield Hills. Speaking at the program were (left to right) Hans Rentrop of Adkison, Need, & Allen PLLC; Terry Schultz of Oakland County Equalization; Michigan Tax Tribunal Judge Patricia Halm, chair; David Nykanen of Steinhardt, Pesick, & Cohen, moderator; and Jason Conti of Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, & Cohn LLP. Attendees were able to hear from all different perspectives—assessors, property owners, municipalities, and the Michigan Tax Tribunal. “We’ll hear about the problems that the Tax Tribunal has been having with the onslaught of appeals in the past years and we’ll hopefully be hearing from everyone on how we’re handling this onslaught of tax appeals given the economic turmoil in our state and how it’s impacted the speed with which municipalities can process these appeals and the number of appeals they’ve been facing,” Nykanen said.
