Man charged in baseball bat slaying of daughter
ROCHESTER HILLS (AP) -- A psychologist faces a first-degree murder charge in the baseball bat beating death of his 20-year-old daughter as she slept in his Oakland County home.
Robert Kelly appeared last Friday for a competency hearing in Rochester Hills District Court. Attempted murder charges were upgraded at the hearing, and it was determined he was competent to stand trial.
Megan Roberts was in a coma and died last Wednesday from her injuries.
Authorities say she was asleep at the start of the May 9 attack in Kelly's home in Oxford, 30 miles northwest of Detroit.
A preliminary examination is scheduled for Aug. 4. The 52-year-old Kelly is being held in the Oakland County jail without bond.
The Associated Press left a message last Friday seeking comment from Kelly's attorney.
