'Tis the season for giving at UDM School of Law

For a school with a longstanding tradition of public service, this semester was a very busy and proud time for the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. The UDM Law Community Service Committee, a group of faculty, administrators, staff, and students from the School of Law, led a fundraising drive to purchase much needed blankets for homeless veterans. The entire School of Law community rallied together to raise funds to purchase 271 blankets to be distributed by the Project SALUTE staff as they tour Michigan and the United States in the Mobile Law Office to assist veterans with benefits claims. Committee members also volunteered this fall for a day at the Capuchin Services Center in Detroit, which distributes (at no cost) food and clothing to people in need, as well as furniture and appliances to families following a stay in an emergency shelter or who have suffered a household fire. The Committee's tasks ranged from sorting and hanging clothes and shoes, packing tomatoes and peppers into individual bags, packing pantry boxes full of canned goods, rice, and other staples, filling shopping carts to the brim with food, and helping clients transport and load their items. Most recently, the Committee organized a festive holiday party for 100 students, 100 parents, and the entire staff of Wayne Elementary School, a Detroit Public School on the eastside. It was an afternoon filled with excitement, laughter, smiles, and goodwill. Everyone was fed a hot holiday meal followed by a visit with Santa who was able to give each student two wrapped presents, a children's book, and a gift bag filled with hats, gloves, and school supplies. Each child also left with a photo of his/her visit with Santa and two bags filled with food and a toiletry bag.
