Moroun, Stamper in clear for now on project
DETROIT (AP) -- The threat of jail for the owner of the Ambassador Bridge appears to be diminished after the latest court hearing about a construction project on the U.S. side of the international crossing.
Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Prentis Edwards says he's satisfied with the progress reported by Detroit International Bridge Co. The company repeated its pledge last Thursday to follow previous court orders and finish its share of the Gateway Project.
In January, Edwards put 84-year-old billionaire Manuel "Matty" Moroun and his top executive, Dan Stamper, in jail for contempt of court. They were released by the Michigan appeals court after one night but remain vulnerable to more jail time.
Moroun's son, Matthew Moroun, says piers are being removed. The project is aimed at moving trucks directly to interstates instead of neighborhood roads.
