University of Michigan eliminates age limit
ANN ARBOR (AP) -- The University of Michigan has abolished a rule requiring its president and executive officers to retire by age 70.
AnnArbor.com reported that the Board of Regents decided the issue last Thursday. The board says the change wasn't about any individual school official.
The existing University of Michigan rule called for the school's president and executive officers to "terminate" their employment no later than the end of the fiscal year in which their 70th birthday occurs. The school's President Mary Sue Coleman is 68.
The school's General Counsel's office said the bylaw constituted age discrimination.
