Oakland County attorney and Friend of the Court Referee Sahera Housey recently announced that she is a candidate for the open seat on the Oakland County Circuit Court bench created by the retirement of Judge Edward Sosnick who currently serves in the Family Division.
Housey has served as a Friend of the Court referee since 2007 and is assigned to Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Joan Young. Housey has presided over more than 5,000 enforcement hearings and more than 3,000 hearings regarding custody, parenting time, and child support. She has established a strong record of trust in this capacity with 98% of her recommended orders having been entered without objection by the parties involved.
A graduate of the University of Detroit-Mercy School of Law and the University of Detroit with honors, Housey currently serves as the chair of the Oakland County Bar Association Family Court Committee and as a board member of the Referees Association of Michigan. She is a board member of the Michigan Inter-Professional Association on Marriage, Divorce, and the Family and serves as a Seminar Speaker for the Oakland County Bar Association on family law. Her experience includes almost twenty years as a practicing lawyer solving difficult legal issues as a mediator of family law and probate cases.
In addition to her legal experience in Oakland County, Housey has also been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C.
“There is no greater honor than the opportunity to serve the community,” Housey said. “Having spent my career fighting for justice for Oakland County families, I am confident that my experience working directly with those involved with the court system on a daily basis, makes me uniquely qualified to serve as Oakland County’s next circuit judge, most likely in the family court.”
Prior to serving as a Friend of the Court referee, Housey was actively involved with Oakland Livingston Legal Aid and Southfield Legal Aid programs. She also served as the former chair of the Legal Section of the ACCESS Coalition on Domestic Violence.
The two candidates for circuit judge in Oakland County receiving the highest vote total in the August 7 primary election will go on to the November general election. The candidate receiving the most votes in the November general election will serve a six-year term as circuit judge.
