Program to explore legal strategies for responding to employees' complaints

Nemeth Burwell's Raising the Bar, an educational series raising employer awareness of current issues in employment and labor law and presented by employment law firm Nemeth Burwell PC, will address strategies for responding to employees' internal complaints at its April 18th presentation. "When speaking in the context of employment litigation n the past two years, the United States Supreme Court has both expanded the definition of what it means for an employee to complain and created liability for an employer's failure to properly investigate those complaints," explains Nemeth Burwell attorney Patricia Nemeth. "That's why a prompt and thorough investigation of employee complaints remains an employer's primary defense to a litany of discrimination and retaliation charges. What an employer does from the moment she first gets notice of the allegations, and how quickly action is taken, can mean the difference between preventing the lawsuit entirely and creating liability where none previously existed." Topics for the presentation on responding to an employee's internal complaint will include: * Ensuring supervisors are properly trained to distinguish between a gripe and a complaint under the new Supreme Court precedent and to take appropriate action. * Understanding the parameters that define a prompt, thorough and independent investigation. * Bracing for the External Charge: Taking the appropriate remedial measures and reducing the likelihood that the EEOC or the DOL will turn a gripe into a complaint. Raising the Bar will be conducted on Wednesday, April 18, from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Troy Marriott, 200 W. Big Beaver Road.
