Thomas P. Clement candidate for open 54-B District Court
East Lansing attorney Thomas P. Clement announces his candidacy for the open 54-B District Court seat due to the retirement of Judge David Jordon at the end of this year.
''My strong background in criminal litigation demonstrates that I know the work, I know the courts, and I know the community. It is my desire to use that knowledge and experience to serve the residents of East Lansing.''
Clement is a partner at Mertens and Clement, PLLC, a law firm that practices in the areas of criminal defense, family law, and general civil litigation. In addition to his active state practice, Clement is an adjunct faculty member at Thomas M. Cooley Law School where he teaches required courses in evidence and criminal law and an elective course in applied evidence. Clement is also an appointed member of the Federal Criminal Justice Act Panel that provides defense to indigent individuals charged with federal crimes.
Prior to private practice, Clement was an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for the Eaton County Prosecutor's Office. During his tenure in criminal prosecution, Clement came to see the state's district courts as the ''epicenter'' of our judicial system. ''The district court is really the people's court. It's where judges have the opportunity to positively impact the life of individuals who come before them.''
Clement notes that ''my extensive experience practicing the type of law that a district court judge sees on a daily basis provides me with a solid foundation to serve the East Lansing community.''
Clement is married to Elizabeth, also an attorney. Together they have four children. Jordan attends East Lansing High school, and Clare, Leo, and Camille all attend St. Thomas Aquinas in East Lansing.
Clement is a graduate of J.D., Michigan State University School of Law, and B.S., Western Michigan University, Political Science and Criminal Justice.
