Appointments made to county arts authority

On Tuesday, May 22, Oakland County Board Chairman Michael J. Gingell announced three appointments to the newly formed Oakland County Arts Institute Authority: attorney Alan Ackerman of Bloomfield Hills, CPA Barbara Dobb of Commerce Township and Dr. David L. Roberson, pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and a resident of West Bloomfield. "I am pleased to be able to appoint these very qualified individuals. I am confident that they will serve in the best interest of Oakland County and that their breadth of experience and exceptional backgrounds will be very valuable to the Arts Institute Authority," stated Gingell. As members of the authority, these individuals will adopt the language for the August 7th ballot that will be brought before county voters to establish a 0.2 property millage increase to fund the Oakland County Arts Institute Authority which will contract services with the Detroit Institute of Art. If the millage passes, the authority will negotiate a contract with the Detroit Institute of Art and monitor the use of the Oakland County funds. These individuals will serve a two-year term and will join the two appointees designated by the Oakland County executive to form the county's five member Arts Institute Authority. Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson recently appointed Jennifer Fischer and Thomas Guastello to the Oakland County Art Institute Authority. "I've appointed two intelligent, well-informed, and community-minded individuals who will be leaders on the authority," Patterson said. "I'm sure they will lead the DIA successfully going forward." Guastello is president of Center Management in Birmingham which specializes in commercial real estate. He is also a practicing attorney. Guastello served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1969-1974 and the Michigan State Senate from 1975-1982 as a Democrat. In addition, he was a member of the Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents, the Mackinac Bridge Authority, and the Metro Detroit Convention & Visitors Bureau. "I'm honored to be selected," Guastello said. "The DIA is one of the true treasures of Michigan. It will benefit greatly by the participation of Oakland County communities." Fischer, wife of The Suburban Collection CEO David Fischer, is a member of the DIA Board of Directors. Plus, she has served as co-chair of multiple DIA gala events. The Fischers are philanthropists who support multiple charities both in southeast Michigan and around the nation.
