Cooley to be honored for pro bono service

The Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association (DMBA) will honor Thomas M. Cooley Law School for its pro bono programs at its 176th annual meeting. Also being honored is judge and former Detroit Mayor Roman Gribbs who is a former member of Cooley's board of directors and is a member of the Thomas M. Cooley Society. The DMBA's Pro Bono Service Award recognizes those who have been active in the DMBA's pro bono programs and have made a meaningful contribution by providing access to justice for the poor. Cooley Law School is receiving this award for its involvement with the DMBA's expungement program which matches DMBA volunteer attorneys with students who draft and argue criminal expungement motions in Wayne County Circuit Court. "We are extremely proud that our students worked along side these volunteer attorneys to offer legal assistance to those who cannot afford to pay a lawyer for help with expungements," said Amy Timmer, Cooley's associate dean of students and professionalism. "Getting a criminal record expunged can mean the difference in obtaining quality employment or even housing, and learning the value of helping others is priceless." Gribbs is being honored with the Frank Murphy Award, which recognizes an attorney whose career has exemplified the highest professional ideals and demonstrated outstanding service to the legal profession. "Judge Gribbs has been an outstanding leader in the community and a long-time supporter of Cooley Law School," said Jim Robb, Cooley's associate dean for development and alumni relations. "We congratulate him for this honor and for all he has done to serve our community." The DMBA's awards will be presented at its annual meeting on May 31 at Detroit's Gem Theatre.
