Michigan economy among nation's fastest growing

LANSING (AP) -- A federal report says Michigan's economy is one of the fastest growing in the nation, leading the Great Lakes region and all but five other states. The Commerce Department report released Tuesday says Michigan's gross domestic product rose 2.3 percent in 2011, compared with the national increase of 1.5 percent. The department's Bureau of Economic Analysis says the measure of economic activity known as GDP rose 1.5 percent last year for the five-state Great Lakes region. The increase was 1.1 percent for Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin and 1.3 percent for Illinois. The report says North Dakota had the fastest growth at 7.6 percent, followed by Oregon at 4.7 percent, West Virginia at 4.5 percent, Texas at 3.3 percent and Alaska at 2.5 percent. ---------------- Report: http://1.usa.gov/LnoGYa.
