ICBA Annual Dinner & Awards Program to be held November 7
Award Nominations due by September 28, 2012
The ICBA invites its members and guests to the Lexington Lansing Hotel on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 for an enjoyable evening with your colleagues as we honor the best in our profession.
Annual Awards
The ICBA will present the Camille S. Abood Distinguished Volunteer Award, Theodore W. Swift Civility Award, Leo A. Farhat Outstanding Attorney Award and Thomas E. Brennan, Sr. Lifetime Achievement Award to members of the Ingham County Bar Association. Members are strongly encouraged to nominate a colleague worthy of recognition. All letters of nomination and supporting documents should be submitted electronically to info@inghambar.org no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2012.
Awards Nomination & Selection Process
The selection of award winners is the responsibility of the ICBA Awards Committee, appointed by the president as outlined below.
1. The Awards Committee is appointed by the president of the ICBA.
2. Nominations shall be submitted electronically to info@inghambar.org.
3. Nominations may be submitted by members or non-members, but the nominee must be a member in good standing of the Ingham County Bar Association.
4. Nominations may be made by members of the committee during the selection process. The committee does not need to select a recipient for each award each year, but only on those occasions when it deems such is appropriate.
5. Voting on selection of award winners and other matters is handled on the basis of a simple majority of the committee members present.
Leo A. Farhat Outstanding Attorney Award
1.The Leo A. Farhat Outstanding Attorney Award shall be presented to a member of the Ingham County Bar Association who has distinguished himself or herself by manifesting exemplary character, integrity, judgment and legal scholarship while adhering to and advancing the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession.
2. In addition to the traditional qualities of excellence in the practice of law, the award seeks to recognize a private law practitioner who has provided outstanding service to the public and who possesses an exemplary reputation in the legal community, the highest of ethical standards, and who revels in maintaining a life that balances a passion for professional excellence with the joy of family and friends. In addition, the award seeks to recognize a person who exhibits qualities of openness and humility, coupled with a sincere concern for the interests of others, including the professional development of newer practitioners.
Camille S. Abood Distinguished Volunteer Award
1. The Camille S. Abood Distinguished Volunteer Award shall be presented to a member of the Ingham County Bar Association who has distinguished himself or herself by making voluntary contributions of time and talent for the benefit of others.
2. The services to be recognized may or may not be law related, but they should indicate a significant commitment to voluntary service.
Theodore W. Swift Civility Award
1. The Theodore W. Swift Civility Award shall be presented to a member of the Ingham County Bar Association who has distinguished himself or herself by manifesting civility in his or her relations with the Bench, Bar, clients, and the public, while adhering to and advancing the highest principals and traditions of the legal profession.
2. The Committee may consider a broad range of factors within the meaning of civility. While not intended to be an exhaustive list, such qualities as promptness, temperament, common courtesy, sense of humor, fairness in scheduling events, fairness in taking depositions, and treatment of witnesses, judges, court personnel, adversaries, and subordinates may be considered.
Thomas E. Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award
The Award is given to lawyers who have made a significant and longstanding contribution to the advancement or improvement of the justice system and the betterment of the legal profession in the State of Michigan and have also attained professional excellence as demonstrated by accomplishments in the law or service to the profession during his or her career. The Lifetime Achievement Award may be given in any one year. However, the award is given only in those years when it is determined that an exceptionally worthy recipient(s) has been nominated.
The Liberty Bell Award
The Liberty Bell Award recognizes outstanding service performed by a non-lawyer citizen who has given time and energy to strengthen the effectiveness of the American system of justice. Such service may include:
1. Promoting a better understanding of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights,
2. Encouraging a greater respect for the law and the courts,
3. Stimulating a deeper sense of individual responsibility so that citizens recognize their duties as well as their rights,
4. Contributing to the effective functioning of our institutions of government and,
5. Fostering a better understanding and appreciation of the rule of law.
Nominations must be received via e-mail no later than 5 p.m. on September 28, 2012.
