Man in Medicare fraud sentenced to 5 years in prison
DETROIT (AP) -- A federal judge in Detroit has sentenced a health clinic operator to five years in prison for his role in an $8.5 million Medicare fraud scheme.
The U.S. Justice Department says Judge Patrick Duggan sentenced 55-year-old Miami-area resident Emilio Haber on Tuesday.
Haber also received three years'a supervised release and must pay a share of $6.3 million in restitution along with his co-defendants.
Prosecutors say Haber pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud. They say he conceived and oversaw fraud schemes at two clinics, Ritecare LLC and CompleteHealth LLC.
According to the government, clinic operators billed Medicare for medically unnecessary tests and services. It says they paid kickbacks Medicare beneficiaries and patient recruiters.
