Judge overturns doctor's murder conviction

DETROIT (AP) -- A federal judge has overturned the murder conviction of a Detroit-area doctor serving a life sentence in the 1983 slaying of his business partner and former lover. In a ruling dated Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Marianne Battani says Dr. Jasubhai Desai's 2001 conviction was flawed because Wayne County prosecutors relied on a co-defendant's confession to link Desai to the killing. The Detroit Free Press reports the decision marks the fourth time the murder charge has been dismissed or overturned. Prosecutors reinstated the charge or conviction in three earlier rulings. Desai had been convicted in the strangulation slaying of Ann Marie Turetzky, his partner in two medical clinics in suburban Detroit.
