Commissioner calls for reimbursement for special election costs in 11th District
On Thursday, Aug. 23, Oakland County Commissioner Kathy Crawford introduced resolution #12187 that supports Reimbursement of Special Election Costs in the 11th Congressional District following the vacancy established after the resignation of Congressman Thaddeus McCotter from the United States House of Representatives.
The Oakland County Board of Commissioners approved resolution #12187, voting 22-2, in favor of it. The board joined in supporting the request of Oakland County Clerk Bill Bullard Jr. to Governor Rick Snyder, Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, and the Michigan State Legislature in seeking $650,000 in anticipated reimbursement costs associated with the 11th Congressional District special election for the local communities.
Local clerks and the Oakland County Clerk's offices will incur these costs from the Aug. 7th primary and Sept. 5th special election, along with the Nov. 6th general election.
The communities to be impacted include Commerce Township, Highland Township, Lyon Township, Milford Township, Northville, Novi, Novi Township, South Lyon, Walled Lake, Waterford Township, White Lake Township, Wixom, Belleville, Canton, Township, Dearborn, Heights, Garden City, Livonia, Northville, Northville Township, Plymouth, Redford Township, Van Buren Township, Wayne and Westland.
"After listening to County Clerk Bullard and Novi Clerk Marianne Cornelius discuss the unanticipated huge costs of this special election and the burden of special training and getting election precincts and workers on short notice, I decided that we should ask the State of Michigan via a Board of Commissioners Resolution, to reimburse the 11th District municipalities. This request is not improper and communities have been reimbursed before for special elections," stated Oakland County Commissioner Kathy S. Crawford.
