OBITUARY
Kenneth N. Hylton Sr.
Kenneth N. Hylton Sr. died Friday, Sept. 7. He was born on July 7, 1929, in Roanoke, Virginia. He attended Talladega College graduating in 1950. He married his wife of 59 years, Ethel W. Hylton (now deceased), in 1951.
He earned his law degree from Boston University Law School in 1952 and a master's degree from Wayne State University in 1954. He served in the army from 1953 to 1956 after which he moved to Detroit to practice law. He gave freely of his time in public service, to the State Bar of Michigan, to politics, to the civil rights movement, and to the community in social and business spheres in addition to working long hours as a lawyer.
A Wayne County public administrator since 1962, Hylton was a partner in the law firms of Bailer, Lee, Long, Brown, & Cain from 1957-1962; Swainson, Dingell, Hylton, & Zemmol from 1962-1967; Dingell, Hylton, & Zemmol from 1967-1977; Kenneth N. Hylton & Associates from 1977-1980; and as senior partner with Hylton & Hylton PC from 1980 to present.
He was a member of the U.S. District Court, Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan; U.S. Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit; U.S. Supreme Court; State Bar of Virginia; State Bar of Michigan; Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association; Wolverine Bar Association; American Bar Association; National Lawyers Guild; and American Trial Lawyers Association.
He served as chairman of the State Bar Grievance Board, State of Michigan; a referee for the Civil Rights Commission of the State of Michigan; and a Fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation.
Hylton is survived by sons Keith N. Hylton and Kevin N. Hylton, and eight grandchildren.
Visitation will take place Thursday, Sept. 13, from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Swanson Funeral Home located at 14751 W. McNichols in Detroit.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 14, at Plymouth United Church of Christ, 600 E. Warren in Detroit, with family hour at 10 a.m. and funeral at 11 a.m. Internment will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to Talladega College in Talladega, Alabama, in memory of Kenneth N. Hylton Sr.
