Local attorney to speak about her successful Supreme Court argument

 Local attorney Valerie Newman will detail her experience of preparing for and successfully arguing a case in the U.S. Supreme Court when she presents “A View from the Podium: Reflections on a Supreme Court Argument” on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 12:15 p.m. in the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium at Wayne  State University Law School, 471 W. Palmer St.  The lecture is free and open to the public and lunch will be served.

 
“She convinced the court that the right to effective assistance of counsel includes not just effective representation at trial, but also effective advising regarding plea bargains,” said Wayne Law Associate Professor Anthony Dillof, whose scholarly focus includes criminal justice. “She’ll be speaking about her experiences preparing for and arguing this important and challenging case.”
 
Newman, a 1992 Wayne Law graduate, in her role as assistant defender with the State Appellate Defender’s Office, argued the 2011 case on behalf of the defendant in Lafler v. Cooper. The defendant’s lawyer wrongly advised his client to reject a guilty plea. Newman asked the court to find that the defendant was entitled to a remedy where he subsequently was found guilty after a fair trial.
 
Her lecture is sponsored by a newly forming Wayne Law student group, tentatively named the Wayne Criminal Law Students Association.
