LAD receives $50,000 grant for online client intake program

Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD), Michigan’s largest public law firm, recently received a $50,000 technology grant from the federal Legal Services Corporation (LSC) to develop an online client intake program.

LAD serves metropolitan Detroit through its offices in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties.  Currently, prospective clients can contact LAD by toll free telephone or by visiting one of its offices.  The online intake program will eliminate call wait time or travel time.

“This will add another point of access to our services,” Michele Hall, LAD’s deputy chief counsel-legal services, said. “Clients who are unable to get to our office due to transportation problems, work schedules or family commitments can complete an online application for legal services at their leisure in their own homes or at public libraries or community centers located within their neighborhoods.”

The online client intake program will allow LAD to better serve their clients “where they are,” LSC President James L. Sandman said at a news conference on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at LAD’s client intake center in Detroit.

Announcing the grant at the news conference, U.S. Rep. John Conyers, Jr., D-14th District, said, “We feel extremely proud that Detroit was included in this activity.”

The grant to LAD is one of 43 grants totaling more than $3.4 million that LSC plans to award through its Technology Initiative Grants (TIG) program (http://tig.lsc.gov/) in 2012. They will fund LSC grantee programs in 25 states and the territory of Guam.

In addition to providing civil legal services in the tri-county area, LAD represents criminal defendants in Wayne County and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.  Including brief consultations and comprehensive legal services, LAD handles some 15,000 legal matters yearly.
