Assistant Defender Valerie Newman of the State Appellate Defender Office detailed her experience of preparing for and successfully arguing a case before the U.S. Supreme Court when she presented “A View from the Podium: Reflections on a Supreme Court Argument” on Thursday, Oct. 4, at Wayne State University Law School.
Newman argued the 2011 case on behalf of the defendant in Lafler v. Cooper. The defendant’s lawyer wrongly advised his client to reject a guilty plea. Newman asked the court to find that the defendant was entitled to a remedy where he subsequently was found guilty after a fair trial. Newman happily discussed her experience appearing before the nation’s highest court. Her lecture was sponsored by a newly forming Wayne Law student group tentatively named the Wayne Criminal Law Students Association.
Welcoming Newman to the school was Wayne Law Associate Professor Anthony Dillof.
