Charity receives $25,000 grant

Catholic Charities of Jackson, Lenawee & Hillsdale Counties has been awarded a grant of $25,000 from the Jackson Community Foundation's Unrestricted Community Needs fund, Executive Director Sue Lewis announced last week. According to Lewis, the grant will be used for the Jackson County Child Advocacy Center. "The Child Advocacy Center provides comprehensive services to children who have been sexually or severely physically abused," Lewis said. Law enforcement and the Prosecutor's Office in Jackson County recognized that these vulnerable children were being re-traumatized every time they had to tell their story to a different person, she said. So 17 months ago, all the agencies involved, from intervention to treatment, were brought together to pilot a Child Advocacy Center for Jackson County. Through the collaboration of many community organizations, this child-friendly center developed a coordinated effort to help children and their non-offending family members deal with the trauma of sexual abuse. "The grant from the Jackson Community Foundation will give us additional resources to establish a permanent home for the center and pursue accreditation," Lewis said. "Once accreditation is achieved, sustainable funding becomes available for us to continue the mission of improving the lives of abused children in our community." Catholic Charities of Jackson County was founded in 1966 and merged in 2010 with Catholic Charities of Lenawee (founded in 1958) to form Catholic Charities of Jackson, Lenawee, and Hillsdale Counties, providing help and creating hope for all people in the tri-county area of southern Michigan.
