Marcia Smith honored for outstanding service

By Tom Gantert Legal News The Jackson County Bar Association awarded the Liberty Bell Award to Marcia Smith, director of Jackson County Guardian Services, a program of Family Services and Children's Aid. The award, presented on Law Day, recognizes "outstanding service performed by a non-lawyer citizen who has given of his or her time and energy to strengthen the effectiveness of the American system of freedom under law, in keeping with the spirit of our Constitution," according to the SBM. Smith has been serving Jackson County for 30 years and works as a court-appointed guardian for incapacitated adults and makes financial decisions in her role, which JCBA President Rebecca Arnold described as one of the more difficult in the courts. Smith's job includes making arrangements for social services and monitoring the progress of the services. As an officer of the Michigan Guardian Association, which lobbies for legislation reform, Smith can be found in probate court on a daily basis. "She's always there," Arnold said.
