Gilman Award honors prosecutor

The Federal Bar Association, Eastern District of Michigan Chapter, hosted the 2012 Leonard R. Gilman Award Luncheon on Tuesday, April 30, at the Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit.

Wayne County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Timothy Baughman (far right) was this year’s Leonard R. Gilman Award recipient.

Happy to congratulate him were (left to right) Michael Leibson, FBA President  Thomas G. McNeill of Dickinson Wright PLLC, and Detroit attorney Nancy J. Diehl.

Baughman worked as an attorney with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office since shortly after he received his law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 1974.  He became the office’s chief of Research, Training and Appeals in 1986.

Baughman has appeared numerous times in the U.S. Supreme Court, winning six of the seven cases he has argued.  He has also supervised the briefing and argument of four other cases in that court, as well as appearing more than 60 times in the Michigan Supreme Court.  Baughman is the author of two books, and various articles on criminal law and criminal procedure.

The Gilman Award is given annually to an outstanding practitioner of criminal law who exemplifies the excellence, professionalism, and commitment to public service of Len Gilman who was U.S. attorney at the time of his death in 1985.  The selection is made by prior recipients of the award, many of whom served with and knew Gilman.
