Free workshop provides look at fair housing laws and assistance programs

A free workshop on fair housing and housing assistance programs is set for Wednesday, May 29, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Oakland County's Conference Center, 2100 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford. Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and the county's Community & Home Improvement Division are hosting the workshop being presented by the Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit. "Fair housing laws ensure that all have access to the American dream of owning their own home," Patterson said. "It is important for housing practitioners to know the law and their responsibilities in order to prevent housing discrimination." Topics include federal, state and local fair housing laws, fair housing legal cases, and reasonable accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Information about housing assistance programs and other resources will be available. Realtors, bankers, community developers, housing counselors, case managers, and those generally involved in the sale, rental, financing and advertising of housing will benefit.
