County employees donate to Oklahoma tornado victims
Oakland County employees will donate $1,000 from the employee Casual Day fund to help the victims of the Moore, Okla. tornado recover from the destruction. The money will be donated to the United Way of Central Oklahoma Disaster Relief Fund.
"The devastation and the countless lives lost are heart-wrenching," said Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. "We hope our donation will provide some relief to families faced with a long recovery and remind them that they are not alone in their hour of need."
The Casual Day program allows employees in participating county departments and divisions to wear jeans or dress casually on Thursdays or Fridays for a minimum donation of $1. Donations collected during the course of the year are distributed to more than 15 designated charities in December. However, there are instances throughout the year when donations are made to address specific events or needs, as is the case with the Moore, Okla. tornado relief.
Since its inception more than 20 years ago, Oakland County employees have donated well over a half million dollars to charity through Casual Day, touching the lives of thousands of people. No taxpayer funds are used in the Casual Day program.
Others who also wish to donate to the United Way of Central Oklahoma's Disaster Relief Fund may send a check, with the notation of "May Tornado Relief," to the United Way of Central Oklahoma, P.O. Box 837, Oklahoma City, OK 73101.
