College Pre-Law Summer Institute offers academic instruction

On Wednesday, May 29, 19 underprivileged students from 13 colleges and universities in five states and the country of Lebanon will ascend onto Cooley Law School's Auburn Hills campus to participate in the nationally recognized College Pre-Law Summer Institute (CPSI). CPSI is being held at Cooley for the fourth year in partnership with Oakland University and the American Bar Association's Council of Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO). The CPSI, which offers students an opportunity to study the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and in law school, will begin with an opening ceremony at noon. The ceremony, which is being hosted and presented by the State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section, will begin with Cooley Associate Dean John Nussbaumer and Professor Christopher Johnson welcoming the students. "The purpose of this intensive pre-law program is to help diversify America's next generation of lawyers by expanding legal education opportunities to students of color, low-income students, and otherwise disadvantaged students," said Nussbaumer. "It is our hope this program will help increase the applicant pipeline to law school and grow diversity in the legal profession to better reflect the clients being served." Students will receive 100 hours of free instruction from Cooley Professors Heather Dunbar, Monica Nuckolls, Tammy Asher, Lewis Langham, and Martha Moore. Instruction on how to succeed on the LSAT will be provided by Test Prep Services. Students will also benefit from group panel discussions led by practicing lawyers and judges from throughout metropolitan Detroit. The students participating in the program hail from Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan and Beirut, Lebanon. Collectively they have an average undergraduate GPA of 3.40. Each student receives a $750 stipend to help cover their expenses while attending CPSI. Major funding for this program comes from Cooley's Dean's Annual Fund and Oakland University. Sponsors for this year's CPSI, which has a budget of more than $25,000, include: Michigan law firms Miller Canfield; Warner Norcross & Judd LLP; Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer, and Weiss; Collins, Einhorn, Farrell, and Ulanoff; Dickinson Wright; Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, and Cohn LLP; Clark Hill; the State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers, Appellate Practice and Health Law Sections; the State Bar of Michigan Law Practice Management and Legal Administrators; Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association; and the Oakland County Bar Association. On Friday, June 28, at 11:30 a.m. students will participate in a closing ceremony, which is being presented and hosted by the Oakland County Bar Association. Published: Mon, May 27, 2013
