Library breaks ground on new addition

The Jackson District Library will officially break ground on an 8,500 square foot addition to its existing Meijer Branch at 2699 Airport Road on Friday, May 31, at 10 a.m. The new addition will feature a dedicated space for teens, quiet study/tutoring rooms, a digital media studio, 23 more computers, and a bookstore to be operated by the Friends of the Library. Renovation of the existing structure will include exciting spaces for young children and families and a meeting space that can accommodate up to 200 people for library and community events. Built in 1983, the Meijer branch has become the busiest branch in the Jackson District Library system, next only to the Carnegie Library in downtown Jackson. The renovation/expansion of the Meijer Branch is estimated to cost $2.7 million. The library will use funds from its reserves and contributions from the general public to finance this project.
