Small claims workshop

Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. (LAD) conducted the last of its spring series of free workshops on small claims court to a standing-room-only crowd on Thursday, June 13, at the Utica Public Library in Utica.

The workshops were designed to teach residents of Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland counties how to represent themselves in small claims court and collect money judgments.

The series was part of LAD’s broad based advocacy program.  Kelly Bidelman (left), managing attorney of LAD’s Macomb County office in Mount Clemens, conducted the Utica workshop.  “The attendance in Utica showed us again the public’s great interest in small claims court,” she said.  “We will began another series of workshops on the subject this fall.”

LAD intern Paula Quarterman (center), a second-year student at Thomas M. Cooley Law School, gave the main presentation at the June 13 workshop.

Craig Pappas (right), executive director of the Resolution Center, opened the workshop by discussing mediation as an alternative to suing in court.
