Landlord/tenant relations explored

Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. (LAD) conducted a free workshop on landlord/tenant relations for residents of Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties on Thursday, July 11, at Don Bosco Hall in Detroit.

During the workshop, Michelle Johnson (second from left), supervising attorney of LAD's Detroit-Wayne County office, spoke with Cody-Rouge Family Connect representatives (left to right) Barbara McCullough, early childhood outreach consultant; Sierra Dunklin, family relations specialist; and Krista Parker, office manager.

“First thing, make sure the person who wants to rent it to you actually owns the property,” said Johnson. “Just because they have keys and show you the property doesn't mean they own it.”

Other topics covered by the workshop included: Verbal agreements and leasing; Security deposits; Dealing with repair problems; Types of tenancy terminations; Illegal evictions and lockouts; and Public/Section 8 housing.

The workshop was one of a series conducted by LAD as part of its broad based advocacy program.
