Gov. Snyder confirms finance emergency in Pontiac schools
PONTIAC (AP) -- Gov. Rick Snyder has confirmed the findings of a state review team and says that the Pontiac Public Schools are in a financial emergency, a step in a process that could lead to the appointment of an emergency manager.
The six-member financial review team last Friday submitted its report to Snyder. He endorsed the finding Tuesday. The district has until Aug. 13 to request a hearing, after which the governor makes a final decision.
The state says that the Pontiac schools' general fund budget deficit increased from $24.5 million to $37.7 million between 2011 and 2012. Unpaid bills to vendors totaled about $33 million as of the end of June.
Public school districts in Detroit, Highland Park and Hamtramck now have emergency managers.
