Oakland County Youth Assistance Mentor David Walker (picured) of Bloomfield Hills was nominated as a state finalist for the Mentor of the Year Award at the 2013 Governor’s Service Awards Ceremony which was held recently at the Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids.
The Mentor of the Year Award is given to an individual who has made a significant difference in a child’s life through mentoring.
Walker has been a volunteer for 16 years serving with the Birmingham Mentors Plus Program of Oakland County Youth Assistance. He has been a mentor to six young men, with one match lasting more than seven years, and volunteered more than 2,000 hours with the program.
In response to Walker being selected as a finalist for this award, Mary Schusterbauer, chief of Oakland County Youth Assistance stated: “We are thrilled to have such a dedicated volunteer in the Mentors Plus Program and are delighted that this is the third year in a row Oakland County Youth Assistance has had a mentor in the top five nominations for the state.”
This year marks the 60th Anniversary of Oakland County Youth Assistance and as part of the celebration have set a goal of 60 new mentors this year.
In conjunction with their 60th Anniversary, Youth Assistance will be hosting a “Walk on the Wild Side” event to be held on Sunday Sept. 22, at the Independence Oaks County Park.
