Oakland County, Walsh College pair up to help seniors with finances

Registration is now open for Oakland County's senior residents who want to empower themselves to make sound financial decisions. The Oakland County Senior Advisory Council and Walsh College will host two free financial seminars for seniors and their families in October. Topics will include: how to avoid scams; what are the "must have" legal documents when estate planning; how to determine whether a reverse mortgage is the right choice for an individual; and how to reconcile accounts, hidden fees and automatic bill pay on savings and checking accounts. "Knowing financial dos and don'ts helps to protect our senior residents," Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said. "Walsh College's independent experts will offer great financial advice without the pressure that sometimes goes along with it." There are no sales pitches with the seminars, just independent experts. The first seminar is 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Walsh College's Novi Campus, 41500 Gardenbrook Road. The second one is 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Walsh College's Troy Campus, 3838 Livernois. "Walsh College's experts blend business theory and real-world experience," said Tara R. Miceli, director of the Walsh Institute. "They will deliver practical advice based on years of know-how." The Oakland County Senior Advisory Council determined the topics from surveys it sent to seniors at senior care organizations throughout the county.
