Mich. smoking quit line surpasses 50,000 users

LANSING (AP) -- More than 50,000 people have used Michigan's program to try to quit smoking in the last 10 years.
The state recently reported that the Michigan Tobacco Quitline has grown from a regional pilot project offering telephone coaching to a comprehensive program since beginning in 2003. The quit line now has coaching on the Internet, through email and text messaging, and referrals to local quit-smoking programs.
About 23 percent of Michigan adults say they smoke cigarettes on a regular basis. That is higher than the U.S. average.
The quit line is available seven days a week and can be reached at 800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669) or https://michigan.quitlogix.org.
