Kilpatrick wants to skip restitution hearing

DETROIT (AP) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says a judge can determine his bill without him.
Kilpatrick says he prefers to skip a Dec. 10 court hearing that will determine how much he owes Detroit and tax collectors after his convictions for corruption and other crimes. He says attorneys Harold Gurewitz and Margaret Raben can handle it.
Kilpatrick is housed at a federal prison in Milan in southeastern Michigan while awaiting a possible transfer to a prison near family in Texas. He's serving a 28-year sentence.
The government says Kilpatrick should be ordered to pay $4.5 million in restitution to Detroit and $195,000 to the Internal Revenue Service.
He and pal Bobby Ferguson were convicted of a bushel of charges related to bribes, extortion and fixed contracts at city hall.
