Paroled killer charged with murdering woman
NOVI (AP) -- A paroled killer has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing of an 84-year-old suburban Detroit woman.
Forty-six-year-old Peter G. Jones was arraigned Wednesday in Novi District Court in the killing of Bernice Schaufele. Judge Dennis Powers ordered him jailed without bond and authorized a court-appointed lawyer for him.
Powers says Jones has a manslaughter conviction in Michigan and another homicide conviction Florida.
Schaufele's daughter found her body Monday inside her home in the Country Place condominiums in Novi, about 20 miles north-northwest of Detroit.
The Oakland County medical examiner's office says she died of "near strangling and a stab wound to the neck."
Police say they arrested Jones after they saw him behaving suspiciously near the killing site and say they found the victim's property in his home.
