Prosecutors to offer advice at Wayne Law speaker series

Three Wayne State University Law School alumni will be part of panel discussion on prosecution as a career at the next Alumni Speaker Series event Wednesday, Jan. 29. The event, "Prosecutors at the Federal, State & Local Levels," will take place from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the Lecture Hall (Room 2242) of Wayne Law's Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights, 471 W. Palmer St. Admission is free and lunch will be provided. To register, email brianna.fritz@wayne.edu. Parking will be available for $6.50 in Structure One across West Palmer Street from the law school. Speakers who will share their experiences and advice are: --Assistant U.S. Attorney Abed Hammoud, class of 1996, who works for the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Eastern District of Michigan. He is assigned to the White Collar Crime Unit, handling cases that include mortgage fraud, credit card fraud, embezzlement, arson and insurance fraud, and advance fee schemes. He spent 15 years in the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office before joining the U.S. Attorney's Office. He teaches Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at Henry Ford Community College. --Assistant Attorney General Angela Povilaitis, class of 2000, who works in the Criminal Division of the Michigan Department of Attorney General. She prosecutes criminal cases throughout the state involving violence against women and is developing a statewide Cold Case Sexual Assault Project, the first of its kind in the country. Povilaitis spent 11 years in the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office before joining the Department of Attorney General. --Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Michael Woodyard, class of 2002, who works with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office in the Public Integrity Unit, investigating and prosecuting cases involving police officers, elected officials and others who breach the public trust. He worked in the Child Abuse Unit during his earlier years with the county Prosecutor's Office, where he served as an intern during his last year of law school. The Alumni Speaker Series is a part of Wayne Law's efforts to link alumni with students and build professional connections.
