Paroled killer to stand trial in woman's murder
NOVI (AP) -- A paroled killer will stand trial in the slaying of an 84-year-old neighbor.
The Detroit News reports that 46-year-old Peter G. Jones was bound over Tuesday to Oakland County Circuit Court on first-degree premeditated murder and felony murder charges following a preliminary examination in Novi District Court.
Bernice Schaufele's body was found Jan. 13 in her Novi condominium, about 20 miles northwest of Detroit. The Oakland County medical examiner's office said she died of "near strangling and a stab wound to the neck."
Police said they arrested Jones after they saw him behaving suspiciously near the killing site. Police testified Tuesday that jewelry and a blood-stained towel were found in Jones' home.
Jones has a manslaughter conviction in Michigan and another homicide conviction Florida.
