Michigan State Police reports decrease in traffic fatalities during 2014 Fourth of July Holiday Weekend

Today, the Michigan State Police (MSP) announced the results of preliminary reports that indicate four people lost their lives in four separate traffic crashes during the 2014 Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Of the four crashes, two involved motorcyclists, one was a pedestrian and the other was a vehicle driver.  Alcohol use was a known factor in two of the crashes.

“These numbers are preliminary and only reflect those fatalities reported to the MSP as of 11 a.m., Monday, July 7, 2014,” stated Capt. Kari Kusmierz, commander of the MSP Training Division.  “The preliminary numbers show a decrease in fatalities from this same holiday period last year.  “The MSP continues to urge motorists not to drink and drive, to always use proper restraints and to drive safely.”

The 2014 Fourth of July holiday weekend ran from 6 p.m. on Thursday July 3, through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2014.  Last year, 17 traffic crashes resulted in 19 deaths over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
