On Thursday, Sept. 4, Access to Bankruptcy Court (ABC), a State Bar of Michigan “Access to Justice” program, hosted its Annual Charity Silent Auction and Networking Event at the law offices of Stevenson & Bullock in Southfield.
Among those helping to raise funds for ABC were (left to right) U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Marci McIvor, Eastern District of Michigan; Judy Calton of Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, & Cohn LLP; Janet Ziulkowski of Ziulkowski & Associates PLC; Alesia Dobbins of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court; Tracy Clark of Steinberg, Shapiro, & Clark; and Barry Lefkowitz.
“Access to Bankruptcy Court is the charity that assists individuals, who are at or above the poverty level, obtain pro bono legal representation by experienced bankruptcy attorneys,” Ziulkowski said. “These debtors typically suffered some financial tragedy that is of no fault of their own. Without the free legal help, they would be victimized by bankruptcy petition preparers and wind up losing assets that they would otherwise be able to keep either by trying to prepare the petition themselves or from the bankruptcy petition preparers.”
ABC was formed after local attorneys, judges, and educators recognized a need for poverty-stricken individuals suffering financial hardship to have essential legal representation in bankruptcy matters. With the assistance of experienced bankruptcy attorneys donating their time and resources, ABC helps the impoverished obtain the financial fresh start they need through education, debt relief assistance, and bankruptcy.
