About Motherly Intercession
There are roughly, 56,000 children under the age of 18 across Michigan who have an incarcerated parent. In most cases the children’s alternate caregivers are unprepared to assume the responsibility of meeting these children’s needs which places them at risk for many negative outcomes. Generational poverty and the lack of a solid system of support are root causes of academic failure, law-violating behavior, and increased incarceration rates. Poverty has an enormous impact on the difference in student academic performance between those chidlren who are economically disadvantaged and those who are not.

The traumatic disruption in a child’s life when their parent is incarcerated can result in high levels of anxiety and stress. These persistent feelings can affect the children’s ability to cope and ultimately cause them to demonstrate poor school performance. At that point, the child is at a disadvantage to excel in school and experience positive development during his or her childhood. These children must have access to resources that promote school achievement, dropout prevention, and positive emotional development.

Over the past 15 years, Motherly Intercession has remained committed to serving these children exclusively because less than 30% of the caregivers and parents feel they have the skill sets needed to provide the children the academic support they need to be successful in school. Clearly these children receive less academic support in learning in the home.

In partnership with volunteers from Mott Comm.?College Dept. of Experiential Learning and the Community, our Reading and Counting to Success afterschool academic support program provides a safe place where children with incarcerated parents can receive bi-weekly homework assistance, tutoring in reading, math and computer technology. Additionally, we provide the children transportation to the tutorial sessions, and serve them a healthy nutritional meal prior to each session. Currently, we have several children on a wait list for the upcoming school year! A donation in the amount of $834 would enable us to serve one additional child for one full year.

Our E Learning Computer Lab provides the students with a full STEM curriculum, however; currently, we are using a timed rotation method because, we only have 12 computers to serve the 25 children who are currently enrolled. A donation in the amout of $1,667 would enable us to purchase additional computers, software, cover the networking, technical support expense and increase the amount of academic instruction each child will receive.
