Judge Filice set to retire after 43 years on the bench

Forty-three years ago, Governor William G. Milliken appointed Charles F. Filice to the 54A District Court for the city of Lansing. On Jan. 1, 2015, the Honorable Judge Charles F. Filice will retire. To celebrate his long-standing career and service to the community, his family and friends have created the Charles F. Filice St. Ives of Tréguier Award. Along with being an advocate of widows and orphans, St. Ives of Tréguier is a patron of lawyers. The Charles F. Filice St. Ives of Tréguier Award, to be known as the Filice-IVO Award, recognizes a law student or a student enrolled in an established paralegal program who demonstrates successful academic achievement, who is active in the community of his or her educational institution, and who possesses outstanding character and demonstrates concern for others through public service. The inaugural recipient of the award for 2014 is Katherine Filimon, a third year law student at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School. The award, which comes with a $500 stipend, was presented by the Catholic Lawyers Guild at a dinner following the annual Diocesan Red Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral in Lansing on Oct. 9, 2014. "In recognizing this outstanding student, it is our goal to encourage devotion to and knowledge of the Red Mass, recognition of St. Ives of Tréguier, as well as celebrating the career of Charles F. Filice," says Judith Mohay Filice. Judge Filice is a graduate of Lansing Community College, Western Michigan University, and Wayne State University Law School.
