Man gets life, no parole in bouncer slaying at club
DETROIT (AP) - One of two men convicted in the fatal shooting of an anti-crime advocate and Detroit nightclub bouncer will spend the rest of his life in prison.
The Detroit News says Carl Bruner expressed condolences to the victim's family but proclaimed his innocence before he was sentenced Monday in Wayne County Circuit Court.
Co-defendant Michael Lawson faces sentencing Feb. 3.
A jury found the pair guilty of first-degree murder last month in the killing 39-year-old Marcel Jackson at Club Pandemonium. Jackson was a member of the crime prevention community group Detroit 300.
Authorities say Jackson kicked Bruner out of the club for hitting a woman before the June 2012 shooting. They say Bruner returned with Lawson and shot Jackson in the back.
Bruner and Lawson were arrested two years later.
