Free Small Business Legal Academy offered

As a part of the 2015 Detroit Entrepreneur Week (DEW), a group of local law firms, legal departments and practitioners are coming together to present a free Small Business Legal Academy (SBLA Detroit) for Detroit area entrepreneurs and start-up businesses. The event will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wayne State University Law School, 471 West Palmer in Detroit. "There will be both organized panels and ample opportunities to meet with legal experts one-on-one to find the resources necessary to move your business ideas to the next level," Thomas Linn, chair emeritus of Miller Canfield and coordinator of the Academy. SBLA Detroit will consist of a series of hands-on panels designed to provide practical legal information necessary for new business owners and entrepreneurs to take their businesses to the next level. The panelists will cover legal issues involving real estate, intellectual property, employment, food businesses, advertising, funding and social entrepreneurial and non-profit undertakings. The panelists will not provide legal representation, but will provide direction and general information relevant to early stage businesses and entrepreneurs. Advance registration is recommended at www.dew15.eventbrite.com. Attendees are welcome to attend all day or for a portion of the day. An agenda will be posted to the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/895941707093852/. Free parking is available in the surface lot immediately north of the Law School. Participating law firms, corporations, and legal organizations include Miller Canfield (breakfast sponsor), Bodman, Dykema, Honigman (lunch sponsor), General Motors, Hewlett Packard, Jaffe (afternoon reception sponsor), Sadek Bonahoom, Wayne Alumni Law Group, Business Law Section of the Michigan State Bar and Michigan Community Resources, among others. Olympia Development is also providing support. SBLA Detroit is based upon a very successful Small Business Legal Academy undertaken by the New York Association of Pro Bono Counsel (APBCo).
