Agency awards $1.5M in grants to organizations

LANSING (AP) - The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded more than $1.5 million in federal grants to 10 Michigan organizations dedicated to helping residents with housing needs.

The housing counseling grants are given to community-based organizations that assist families and individuals looking to find housing, make more informed housing choices and avoid foreclosures. Recipients will use the grants to address a person's housing needs by evaluating their readiness to buy a home, as well as helping them understand financing options and navigate the process.

Antonio R. Riley of Housing and Urban Development says the grants will educate consumers and increase access to housing credit in Michigan.
