Sen. Peters calls for review of nation's criminal justice systems

DETROIT (AP) — U.S. Sen. Gary Peters has called for a review of the nation’s criminal justice systems.

The Michigan Democrat said last Friday at Wayne State University in Detroit that the board would propose reforms to address the most pressing issues.

He pointed to the January beating of a motorist by an Inkster police officer and rioting in Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri, linked to the deaths of black men following confrontations with white officers as reasons for the evaluation.

Recent protests also have been held in Detroit after the fatal shooting in April of robbery suspect Terrance Kellom by a federal agent.

In April, Peters helped introduce legislation to create the National Criminal Justice Commission which would complete the comprehensive review.

Peters says the last comprehensive review was in 1965.
