Monday Profile: Gerardo Martinez

Gerardo Martinez was born in Palm Springs, Calif., and grew up in Houston with his two older and younger sisters.

He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he earned his undergrad degree in Government in 2010 and became a member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity.

Martinez moved to Michigan to attend Thomas M. Cooley Law School, from which he graduated in 2013.

The son of immigrant parents from Mexico, Martinez experienced firsthand the long and arduous journey in reaching the American dream. His passion for immigration law led him to MTZ LAW, where he currently practices family-based immigration as an attorney in Ann Arbor.

What is your most treasured material possession?
My baseball card collection.

What advice do you have for someone considering law school?
  Law school takes determination and discipline. You should only consider it if you are willing to sacrifice.

Favorite local hangouts: The arboretum, 8 Ball, The Ark.

Why did you become a lawyer? To better help others through public service.

What would surprise people about your job?
That, as an attorney, I am constantly learning something new every day.

What is your most typical mood? Relaxed.

Favorite beverage: Café Americano.

Who is on your guest list for the ideal fantasy dinner party? John Lennon and Thom Yorke.

What’s the most awe-inspiring place you’ve ever been? The cliffs of Chino Canyon, California.

How did you earn your first dollar?
I worked at Subway during high school.

Favorite joke: What do you call 100 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean? A good start.

Do you have spiritual beliefs? Yes, I believe in a higher being.

What do you do to relax? Listen to the Beatles and watch my favorite movies.

How would you describe your home? Calm and inviting.

What word do you overuse? “Maybe.”

What is one thing you would like to learn to do? Play the piano.

What is the best advice you ever received? You can get through anything with enough hard work.

What do you drive? Ford F-150.

What would you drive if money were no object? 1966 Porsche 911s

What is your motto? Live life to its fullest.
