Oakland University hikes tuition 8.5 percent

AUBURN HILLS (AP) - Oakland University has joined Eastern Michigan University in ignoring the state's 3.2 percent tuition cap, trading more income from students for a loss in aid from Lansing. Trustees at the Auburn Hills-based school voted Tuesday to increase tuition 8.5 percent for the coming academic year. The university says that will bring in $12 million more in tuition revenue but cost $1.2 million in state aid. Full-time tuition for the school's about 21,000 students will average $11,513 for 2015-2016. University President George Hynd says Oakland's tuition is "below the market" and near the bottom of Michigan's 15 public universities. Ypsilanti-based Eastern Michigan last month raised tuition by 7.8 percent for next school year. That will cost $1 million in state aid while bringing in $10 million. Published: Thu, Jul 09, 2015
