Michigan Capitol dome repairs moving forward

LANSING (AP) — State officials have shown off work now under way in the $6.4 million project to repair and update the state’s historic Capitol.

Officials said Tuesday that the dome work is on schedule for completion in mid-October. The overall project also includes restoration to parts of the building’s exterior.

Work crews are restoring the exterior of the dome’s exterior finishes that wasn’t completed during the last major restoration completed in 1992. The cornerstone for the Capitol was laid in 1873.

All work is expected to wrap up sometime in November.

A 2014 law gives the Michigan Capitol Commission about $3 million a year in state tobacco tax revenue for upkeep of the building.
